Mitsubishi Fuso is Going Electric

Mitsubishi Fuso at the Work Truck Show

After the Show

Fuso was at this years 2016 Work Truck Show and debuted two prototypes of it’s E-cell all-electric truck

Here’s an interesting article from the Fleet Equipment Magazine website about Fuso leading up to the show

After a year of in-use testing demonstrated a 64% savings in operating costs compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle in the same service, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc. (MFTA) will debut two prototypes of its Fuso E-cell all-electric truck at The Work Truck Show 2016. One of the prototypes will be available for test drives as part of The Work Truck Show Ride-and-Drive.

The testing of the new battery-powered Fuso Canter FE-Series medium-duty cabover, according to MFTA, was conducted by its parent company, Daimler Trucks Asia/Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp. In a field trial as part of the truck’s ongoing development, fleet customers in Portugal, where the vehicles are manufactured, operated eight prototypes in routine service while Mitsubishi Fuso engineers monitored the vehicles’ performance and use profiles.

An analysis of the data, according to the manufacturer, revealed that the Canter E-cell work trucks required less fuel compared to an equivalent Canter’s average diesel fuel consumption. Actual savings, the company noted, would depend on the cost of diesel fuel and electricity, but based on diesel fuel pricing and electricity costs in Portugal over the test period the E-cell trucks produced a savings of 64%.

Additionally, the OEM pointed out that the eight E-cell test vehicles produced zero CO2 tailpipe emissions. A 37% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel-powered trucks was realized, the company added, after accounting for emissions generated by the power plants creating the electricity needed to recharge the truck’s batteries.

The company also reported […]

Engine protection system available on all Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Trucks

According to Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc., a new engine protection system, developed at the request of its fleet customers, is now standard on all 2015 models and available as a no-cost upgrade on all 2012–2014 model-year Canter FE and FG Series work trucks.

The new EPS will shut down the engine in the event of critically low oil pressure and regulate fuel flow to reduce engine heating upon sensing elevated coolant temperature. This system acts as an automatic back-up in the event that the driver fails to respond if the instrument cluster indicates low engine oil pressure or rising coolant temperature.

According to Leighton Good, MFTA’s manager, product and applications, “New 2015 model Canters will come from the factory with the EPS installed. But now that we have this set of protections available, we want all of our FUSO Canter owners to take advantage of the benefits. So we will also be installing the EPS on all of the Canters in inventory at our ports-of-entry before they’re shipped to our dealer network, and we’ll retrofit this system for FUSO owners who request it from a local authorized Fuso dealer. This is a software upgrade that takes advantage of the sensors already installed on the truck. It can be performed easily during a normal maintenance visit and it requires no hardware changes.”

Mitsubishi Fuso and the Supreme Fiberpanel

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc. (MFTA) announced that its 2015 Canter FE130 medium-duty work truck (13,200-lb. GVWR) is now available with a Supreme FiberPanel (HC) HoneyComb dry van body.

We found some great news about Mitsubishi Fuso and Supreme teaming up to provide the reliable Fuso Canter FE truck with the Fiberpanel Honeycomb dryvan from Supreme Body Corp.

From the Fleet Equipment Magazine website:

The Class 3 Canter FE130 features a body/payload capacity of up to 7,975 lbs. When the Supreme body is installed on the FE130, the total body/payload advantage jumps to nearly 1,000-lb., compared to the previous model.

According to Supreme, a 14-ft. FiberPanel HC body with composite rear rollup door weighs 288 lb. less than a 14-ft. box made of standard fiberglass-reinforced plywood (FRP). And that weight savings translates directly to more payload.

According to Leighton Good, MFTA’s manager, product and applications, “We are always looking for ways to reduce cost-of-ownership for our FUSO owners. Our efficient frame design and use of lightweight structural technologies throughout the chassis help increase the Canter’s payload compared to competitive trucks. By adding this new Supreme FiberPanel HC body, we can boost payload capacity even more—allowing our customers to haul more per trip. And that helps them reduce their truck transport costs.”

The FiberPanel HC body is available in 12-, 14- and 16-ft. lengths, with 96 in. width and interior heights of 85 in., 91 in. or 97 in.

Mitsubishi Fuso Commercial Trucks History

Throwback Thursday – Mitsubishi Fuso Trucks

After doing a little research we found some interesting Mitsubishi Fuso history and some cool old pictures:

Fuso began in 1932 with the production of it’s first commercial vehicle, a passenger bus named the B46. The bus would carry up to 38 people and was equipped with a 100 h.p., 6 cyl gas engine.

With the release of the B46 bus, a celebration was held where employees were invited to offer ideas for a name and the “Fuso” name won out.

In 1963, approximately 31 years later, the first Canter was born and since then over 4 million vehicles have been produced. The “Fuso” focus has always been to provide vehicles that would make delivery and transportation more cost efficient and more economical for customers across the globe.

Fuso Announces new FE130 model

Mitsubishi Fuso introduces new higher-GVWR Class 3 work truck

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From Fleet Equipment Magazine:

Fuso announces new FE130

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc. introduced its new Canter FE130 work truck at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis on March 5. Its new entry into the Class 3 segment boosts GVWR and body/payload capacity by 700 lb. over the previous FE125 model.

According to the company, the boost in GVWR is actually the second part of a program to expand the utility and versatility of its Class 3 offering. In making the introduction, Todd Bloom, MFTA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “Strategically, this new truck is a direct result of our continuing efforts to improve and refine our products to provide increasing value to FUSO owners. We added a long-wheelbase option to our 2014 model FE125 as a running change in the fall of 2013. The new 169.3” wheelbase option allows installation of 20’ bodies—which greatly expanded the cargo volume capabilities of our lightest truck. For our customers who transport high-bulk items, this is a real benefit. But those who haul heavier items could only take advantage of the longer wheelbase if the GVWR also increased. And that’s where the new FE130 comes in.”

Model designations for FUSO commercial trucks are derived from their GVWRs. The GVWR for the new FE130 is 13,200 lb., compared to 12,500 lb. for the truck it replaces….Read More
