Fuso Launches New Model – the All Electric eCanter

Mitsubishi Fuso Launches New Production Model, the All-Electric eCanter

Indianapolis, IN — Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America, Inc. (FUSO) will bring limited-production line fully electric trucks to market in the U.S., Japan and Europe before the end of 2017. The company made the surprising announcement at its press conference, held in its booth at The Work Truck Show on Wednesday, March 15.

The company has dubbed this new, all-electric, battery-powered medium-duty work truck the eCanter. It will be the first 100% plug-in electric work truck designed and produced by a major truck manufacturer, and the first production models are scheduled to arrive in the U.S. later this year.

The eCanter is a Class 4 truck with a 15,995 lb. GVWR and a payload capacity of roughly 9,380 lb. It has a practical range up to 100 miles, 1- hour quick charge capability, and standard 8-hour overnight charge.

According to Jecka Glasman, FUSO’s president and CEO, “We believe the eCanter will help us chart the future of medium-duty trucking in urban environments. It delivers up to a 100-mile range, with zero emissions and zero noise pollution—what we call positive energy. We’ve had preliminary conversations with multiple customers and they are enthusiastic about the possibilities this new truck represents.”

The eCanter also offers flexible battery configurations, so end users can choose between maximizing the eCanter’s range to its full capacity of 100 miles, or working with a somewhat smaller range in order to maximize its payload.

In summarizing one of the significant aspects of these new electric trucks, Otto Schmid, FUSO’s Director, Product Management, noted, “While the new eCanter has a different look than our standard FE Series cabovers, the electric drivetrain is fitted to our standard 151.6˝-wheelbase cab-chassis—so customers and upfitters will […]

Mitsubishi Fuso Offers Mobileye Safety System on Its FE and FG Trucks

For model year 2017, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America will offer optional Mobileye collision-avoidance systems on its FE and FG Series trucks.

For a limited time, MItsubishi Fuso will install the Mobileye system free of charge on all 2017 FE and FG Series trucks, normally a $1,000 option, the OEM said.

“We recognize that driver efficiency and safety have direct impact on the bottom line for all of our Fuso customers,” said Otto Schmid, MFTA director of product management. “The Mobileye Collision Avoidance System has proved itself in our testing to reduce the number of incidents that trigger warnings for tailgating, lane departure, urban collision, and rural or highway collision by an average of 50%.”

The study conducted by MFTA also showed that where drivers received specific training in system safety detection and operation, reductions were significantly higher. The Mobileye system is aimed at improving safe operation of the truck, particularly in densely populated urban areas where most Fuso trucks are in use.

The Mobileye system’s forward-looking sensors can detect and warn of an imminent rear-end collision at any vehicle speed, with up to 2.7 seconds of advance notice. The Mobileye system identifies pedestrians and cyclists during daylight hours and alerts drivers in the event of a possible collision.

The headway monitor assists the driver in maintaining a safe following distance from the vehicle in front, displaying the amount of time, in seconds, to the vehicle in front when that time drops below 2.5 seconds. A green vehicle icon signifies safe headway, a red icon signifies unsafe and the system provides an alert if the time becomes dangerously short.

The lane departure warning alerts the driver when the vehicle departs from the driving lane without turn signals, by displaying a right- […]

Mitsubishi Fuso is Going Electric

Mitsubishi Fuso at the Work Truck Show

After the Show

Fuso was at this years 2016 Work Truck Show and debuted two prototypes of it’s E-cell all-electric truck

Here’s an interesting article from the Fleet Equipment Magazine website about Fuso leading up to the show

After a year of in-use testing demonstrated a 64% savings in operating costs compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle in the same service, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc. (MFTA) will debut two prototypes of its Fuso E-cell all-electric truck at The Work Truck Show 2016. One of the prototypes will be available for test drives as part of The Work Truck Show Ride-and-Drive.

The testing of the new battery-powered Fuso Canter FE-Series medium-duty cabover, according to MFTA, was conducted by its parent company, Daimler Trucks Asia/Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp. In a field trial as part of the truck’s ongoing development, fleet customers in Portugal, where the vehicles are manufactured, operated eight prototypes in routine service while Mitsubishi Fuso engineers monitored the vehicles’ performance and use profiles.

An analysis of the data, according to the manufacturer, revealed that the Canter E-cell work trucks required less fuel compared to an equivalent Canter’s average diesel fuel consumption. Actual savings, the company noted, would depend on the cost of diesel fuel and electricity, but based on diesel fuel pricing and electricity costs in Portugal over the test period the E-cell trucks produced a savings of 64%.

Additionally, the OEM pointed out that the eight E-cell test vehicles produced zero CO2 tailpipe emissions. A 37% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel-powered trucks was realized, the company added, after accounting for emissions generated by the power plants creating the electricity needed to recharge the truck’s batteries.

The company also reported […]

Mitsubishi Fuso Previewed Canter FE-Series Prototype at NTEA Work Truck Show

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America has noted that its parent company, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, is well along in the development of a new all-electric, battery-powered FUSO Canter FE-Series medium-duty cabover work truck. A year of in-use testing has demonstrated that FUSO E-Cell trucks can generate a 64 percent savings in operating costs compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle in the same service.

To ascertain the level of interest in an electric work truck in North America, MFTA showed a Canter E-Cell truck at the NTEA 2016 Work Truck Show in Indianapolis.  In addition to the truck shown in the company’s booth, a second E-Cell truck will be available for the Green Truck Summit Ride-and-Drive event at the show.

In-use testing demonstrates benefits of the all-electric e-cell truck
To prove the value of an all-electric work truck, MFTA’s parent company conducted a field trial using eight prototype vehicles, with varied flatbed/stakebody and dry van bodies installed. These trucks were operated by fleet customers in Europe, where the vehicles are assembled. The fleet managers were asked to put the E-Cell trucks to use in routine service while Mitsubishi Fuso engineers closely monitored the vehicles’ performance and use profiles for a full year.

An analysis of the data revealed that the Canter E-Cell work trucks required an average of 76.6 kwh/100 miles (47.6 kwh/100 km), compared to an equivalent Canter’s average diesel fuel consumption of 3.72 gallons/100 miles (14.08 liters/100 km). Actual cost savings in any particular region would depend on the cost in that region of diesel fuel and electricity. Based on diesel fuel pricing and electricity costs in the European locations where the trucks were operated, over the period of the testing, the E-Cell trucks […]
