Isuzu Breaks Sales Records Yet Again

Sales of Isuzu Trucks and Isuzu Parts Reach All-Time High in 2017
ANAHEIM, Calif.—Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc, distributor of America’s bestselling low cab forward trucks, announced today that it shattered two sales records in 2017, making last year its new benchmark for retail sales of Isuzu-brand trucks and sales of Isuzu parts. This marks the third year in a row that Isuzu has established records in these key metrics.

Isuzu dealers retailed 22,633 Isuzu trucks to customers in 2017—a record for Isuzu-brand trucks in the United States.

In addition, Isuzu dealers purchased more parts with a sales increase of 3.9% versus 2016, setting another record.

“These records carry more meaning when you consider that we faced an increasing level of competition throughout 2017,” said Shaun C. Skinner, president, Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “Our 2017 results are a testament to the hard work of our dealer body and our field force—and, of course, the loyalty of our customers.”

Skinner expressed confidence that the company’s momentum will continue into 2018: “The forecasts for our economy continue to be positive. Medium-duty trucks are in demand, and as the retail environment changes to rely less on bricks and mortar, that demand is expected to grow even more. And we have the strongest product lineup we have ever offered, with the addition of the all-new Class 6 FTR.

“Combine all these factors and 2018 looks to be another great year for Isuzu,” Skinner said.

FMCSA Publishes 90-day ELD Waiver for Short-Term Rental Trucks

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published in the Federal Register the waiver the Truck Renting and Leasing Association requested for short-term rental trucks. This 90-day waiver from the electronic logging device mandate runs from Jan. 19, 2018, until April 19, 2018.
While TRALA was told by the agency Dec. 12 that this waiver was coming, TRALA had been waiting for the FMCSA to formally post it in the Federal Register. This way any driver of a short-term rental truck can simply print out a copy of the notice and carry it in their cab during this time frame, according to TRALA.

With the ELD mandate going in to effect on Dec. 18, 2017, TRALA says many enforcement officers have been unaware of the waiver being granted for rental trucks, which had created confusion for several TRALA members. With the waiver posted in the Federal Register, TRALA expects the inspection process to be much simpler for users of rental trucks.
The 90-day waiver will allow trucks rented for 30 days or less to use paper logs to record their hours of service and allow those providing the rental or lease trucks more time to equip trucks with ELDs. This 90-day waiver can only be issued once. After it expires, TRALA notes, rental customers will still be able to rely on the eight-day exemption from the ELD mandate for rental trucks that TRALA received late last year, which runs for five years.
There are several requirements within the 90-day waiver that must be followed in order to benefit from this exemption.  They include:
1. The waiver will expire on April 19, 2018.
2. The exemption covers rental of any property-carrying vehicle for a period of 30 days or less. Evidence that a carrier […]

Isuzu FTR Independent Testing Results Demonstrates All Around Excellence

Isuzu FTR Takes on Five Competitors in Acceleration, Braking, Maneuverability, Fuel Economy and More
ANAHEIM, Calif.—Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., distributor of America’s best-selling low-cab-forward trucks, has announced the results of independent testing of its all-new FTR. The testing pitted the Isuzu against five of its top competitors in five areas important to owners and operators of Class 6 trucks.
“When we introduced the FTR last spring, some naysayers thought a four-cylinder Class 6 truck could never compete with the six-cylinder models you typically find in this segment,” said Shaun Skinner, president of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., “But the results demonstrate that the FTR exceeds expectations against the top vehicles in its class—and beats them all for maneuverability and fuel economy.”
The tests were conducted by Pro Formance Group, Inc. (PFG), in Chandler, Arizona, and the results were certified by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
The six vehicles evaluated in the test:

Isuzu FTR
Freightliner M2 106
Navistar DuraStar 4300
Hino 268A
Ford F-650
Kenworth K270

The testing consisted of the following:

Acceleration (0–20, 0–30, 0–40, 0–50, 0–60 and 30–50 miles per hour)
Braking (55–0 and 30–0 mph)
Measured turning radius
Time and speed on two separate hill climbs
Fuel economy (measured on both a 198.7-mile mountain route and a 120.7-mile city route with 24 “delivery stops”)

The testing methods were designed by PFG to emphasize consistency and repeatability of results. In addition to SCCA—which sanctioned, observed and validated all testing procedures—PFG engaged Trivinci Systems of Ashburn, Virginia, to provide all instrumentation and an engineer to capture, record and analyze all data during testing.
Fuel Economy: has been one of Isuzu’s strengths since its entry in the market over 30 years ago—and the FTR reinforced Isuzu’s reputation […]

PennDOT Winter Driving Tips

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Winter Driving Tips
Some areas in the Northeast and Midwest are seeing record low temperatures and historic levels of snow. One major road hazard is black ice, which dramatically reduces traction and is virtually invisible.
Black ice forms when the ground temperature causes precipitation to freeze upon impact. The highest-risk areas include driveways, roadways, bridges, overpasses and ramps.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers these tips for driving in ice this season:

Before getting on the roads when it is cold and wet, drivers should check the area’s weather conditions in order to be informed.

Stay calm and let the vehicle pass over the black ice.

Lift your foot off the accelerator.

Do not hit the brakes, yet keep your steering wheel steady.

Do not overcorrect your steering if you feel your car sliding.

Be cautious. Slow down and increase your following distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

Other tips for safe driving this winter season:

Carry a winter emergency travel kit.

Listen to weather and travel advisories, but if you don’t have to travel in bad weather, don’t.

Keep your gas tank at least half full.

Slow down and increase following distance.

Avoid sudden stops and starts.

Beware of roads that may look wet, but are actually frozen, often referred to as “black ice.”

Use extra caution on bridges and ramps, where ice can often form without warning.

Carry a cell phone.

Do not use cruise control while driving on snow-covered roads.

State law requires you to turn on your headlights when your wipers are on.

Use your low beams in particularly bad weather, especially in cases of heavy or blowing snow.

Remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors and all vehicle lights […]
