CVSA Results from Unannounced Brake Safety Day

The CVSA released the results from the unannounced brake safety enforcement event, Brake Safety Day, which took place on May 3, 2017. More than 9,500 commercial motor vehicles were inspected.

The goal of Brake Safety Day is to conduct roadside inspections and identify and remove vehicles with critical brake violations from our roadways in an effort to reduce the number of crashes caused by or made more severe by poorly maintained braking systems on commercial motor vehicles. The event also sought to evaluate how well ABS are maintained in accordance with federal regulations.

During the event, 21% of all inspections resulted in a vehicle being placed out of service for violations with 12% of all inspections resulting in a brake-related violation that put a vehicle out of service.

The next Brake Safety Day event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at participating jurisdictions throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Truck Tire Safety Tips – Tech Tip Tuesday

Commercial Tire Safety Tips —————————————————————————

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has advised that exceeding tire speed ratings, increased front axle loads, and increased uptime/equipment utilization have led to increased tire failures on commercial trucks.

Here are some tire safety tips from The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to keep your truck on the road and safe:

Tire Inspection

Examine your tires EVERY DAY for:

Irregular tread wear
Cracking
Bulges
Inadequate tread depth
Cuts
Foreign objects
Other Damage

Inflation Pressure

Improper inflation pressure affects tire wear and fuel efficiency.

GAUGE your tires COLD before each trip
Adjust as necessary

Rims

Mismatched tire and rim components may explode and cause serious injury or death.

ONLY use approved tire/rim combinations of the appropriate width and diameter.

Extreme Loading

Overloading or under inflation causes excessive heat build-up and internal structural damage that can lead to a tire failure.

Speed

DO NOT exceed your tires’ speed rating – Doing so will damage your tires and lead to premature failure.

CVSA’s Brake Safety Day 2017

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Day is Sept. 7, 2017

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance announced that September 7th, 2017, is Brake Safety Day, an enforcement and compliance campaign where law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes, and brake-system and antilock braking system (ABS) violations as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Airbrake Program.

The goal of Brake Safety Day is to reduce the number of crashes caused by poorly maintained braking systems on commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) by conducting roadside mechanical fitness inspections, and identifying and removing vehicles with critical brake violations from our roadways.

In addition, outreach and educational efforts by CMV inspectors, motor carriers and others are integral to the success of the campaign. Brake Safety Day activities seek to educate drivers, mechanics, owner-operators and others on the importance of proper brake maintenance, operation and performance.

Properly functioning brake systems are crucial to safe CMV operation. CMV brakes are designed to hold up under tough conditions, but they must be routinely inspected and maintained carefully and consistently so they operate and perform properly throughout the vehicle’s life. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce braking efficiency and increase the stopping distance of trucks and buses, posing serious risks to all highway users and public safety. Antilock braking systems help the vehicle, and thus the driver, maintain control in certain situations, which reduces the risk of some types of crashes.

Brake-related violations comprised the largest percentage (representing 45.7 percent) of all out-of-service violations cited during Operation Airbrake’s companion International Roadcheck campaign in 2016, which focused on inspections of both commercial motor vehicles and drivers.
