Isuzu FTR Independent Testing Results Demonstrates All Around Excellence

Isuzu FTR Takes on Five Competitors in Acceleration, Braking, Maneuverability, Fuel Economy and More
ANAHEIM, Calif.—Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., distributor of America’s best-selling low-cab-forward trucks, has announced the results of independent testing of its all-new FTR. The testing pitted the Isuzu against five of its top competitors in five areas important to owners and operators of Class 6 trucks.
“When we introduced the FTR last spring, some naysayers thought a four-cylinder Class 6 truck could never compete with the six-cylinder models you typically find in this segment,” said Shaun Skinner, president of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., “But the results demonstrate that the FTR exceeds expectations against the top vehicles in its class—and beats them all for maneuverability and fuel economy.”
The tests were conducted by Pro Formance Group, Inc. (PFG), in Chandler, Arizona, and the results were certified by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
The six vehicles evaluated in the test:

Isuzu FTR
Freightliner M2 106
Navistar DuraStar 4300
Hino 268A
Ford F-650
Kenworth K270

The testing consisted of the following:

Acceleration (0–20, 0–30, 0–40, 0–50, 0–60 and 30–50 miles per hour)
Braking (55–0 and 30–0 mph)
Measured turning radius
Time and speed on two separate hill climbs
Fuel economy (measured on both a 198.7-mile mountain route and a 120.7-mile city route with 24 “delivery stops”)

The testing methods were designed by PFG to emphasize consistency and repeatability of results. In addition to SCCA—which sanctioned, observed and validated all testing procedures—PFG engaged Trivinci Systems of Ashburn, Virginia, to provide all instrumentation and an engineer to capture, record and analyze all data during testing.
Fuel Economy: has been one of Isuzu’s strengths since its entry in the market over 30 years ago—and the FTR reinforced Isuzu’s reputation […]

PennDOT Winter Driving Tips

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Winter Driving Tips
Some areas in the Northeast and Midwest are seeing record low temperatures and historic levels of snow. One major road hazard is black ice, which dramatically reduces traction and is virtually invisible.
Black ice forms when the ground temperature causes precipitation to freeze upon impact. The highest-risk areas include driveways, roadways, bridges, overpasses and ramps.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers these tips for driving in ice this season:

Before getting on the roads when it is cold and wet, drivers should check the area’s weather conditions in order to be informed.

Stay calm and let the vehicle pass over the black ice.

Lift your foot off the accelerator.

Do not hit the brakes, yet keep your steering wheel steady.

Do not overcorrect your steering if you feel your car sliding.

Be cautious. Slow down and increase your following distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

Other tips for safe driving this winter season:

Carry a winter emergency travel kit.

Listen to weather and travel advisories, but if you don’t have to travel in bad weather, don’t.

Keep your gas tank at least half full.

Slow down and increase following distance.

Avoid sudden stops and starts.

Beware of roads that may look wet, but are actually frozen, often referred to as “black ice.”

Use extra caution on bridges and ramps, where ice can often form without warning.

Carry a cell phone.

Do not use cruise control while driving on snow-covered roads.

State law requires you to turn on your headlights when your wipers are on.

Use your low beams in particularly bad weather, especially in cases of heavy or blowing snow.

Remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors and all vehicle lights […]

TRALA Granted 90-Day Waiver from ELD Mandate for Short-Term Rental Trucks

Today the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) was notified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that they have granted TRALA’s request for a 90-Day waiver from the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Mandate for short-term rental trucks (defined as 30 days or less). This decision will give all TRALA members until March 18, 2018 to take the necessary steps to get their trucks in compliance with the mandate as well as work with their customers to make the transition to ELDs as seamless as possible.
The ELD rule requires that nearly all drivers must use an ELD to record their hours-of-service requirements beginning on December 18, 2017. Though certain exemptions were given in the original rule, the FMCSA did not grant an exemption for all short-term rental trucks despite the myriad of issues that specifically would impact the rental industry and were cited by TRALA in its formal comments to the rule. After the rule was released, TRALA submitted a petition requesting a 5 year exemption from the ELD Mandate for trucks rented for 30 days or less. After the public comment period – during which over 300 comments were submitted in support of TRALAs exemption while less than 10 were opposed – and after nearly 6 months of deliberations, on October 24, 2017 the FMCSA granted a partial exemption to TRALA for rental trucks, but for only 8 days rather than the 30 days TRALA had requested.
Despite receiving a partial exemption, TRALA felt that FMCSA had not left TRALA members enough time to properly equip their fleet, and determine how to operate their rental fleets in compliance with the ELD mandate. TRALA continued to discuss further options with FMCSA to help ease the burden on the […]
